Daily drawdown meaning in forex, explained with one losing day

Daily drawdown is how far your account has fallen during the current trading day, measured from a start-of-day figure that is fixed at the daily reset. A daily drawdown limit is the most that fall may reach before the day, or the account, is stopped.

The phrase sounds technical, but the idea is simple once you watch it happen. Below we follow one made-up losing day on a small account, trade by trade, and work out after each step how much of the day’s limit has been used. The figures are invented only to show the method.

The three parts of the definition

Every daily drawdown rule is built from three pieces, and each rule set fills them in its own way:

  1. The start-of-day figure. The value fixed when the trading day begins. Usually the balance at the reset, sometimes the higher of balance and equity at that moment.
  2. The current figure. Either equity, which includes open positions, or balance, which counts only closed trades.
  3. The limit. A fixed amount or a percentage of a base, such as the starting account size or the start-of-day figure.

Daily drawdown at any moment is the start-of-day figure minus the current figure. The room left is the limit minus that drawdown. When the room left reaches zero, the rule is broken.

One losing day, hour by hour

Example only, to show the method: a 10,000-dollar account, a daily limit of 500 dollars, counted from the balance at the reset. The trader is not following any advice here; the trades simply illustrate the sum.

Time (server)What happensBalanceEquityDrawdown (equity)Room left
00:00Day resets10,00010,0000500
09:40Trade A closes at a loss of 1809,8209,820180320
11:15Trade B open, 250 down9,8209,57043070
11:30Trade B recovers to 120 down9,8209,700300200
14:05Trade B closes at a loss of 1409,6809,680320180

Look at 11:15. On paper the trader had lost only 180 dollars in closed trades, yet the open position had used most of the day’s room. Had the price moved another 70 dollars against trade B at that moment, an equity-based rule would have been broken, even though the trade later recovered most of the way.

The same day counted two ways

Now count the same day on closed balance only. At 11:15 the drawdown is 180, not 430, because trade B is still open. The room left looks like 320. Both numbers describe the same account at the same moment; they answer different rules.

That is why the definition matters more than the percentage. Two firms can both say “5% daily drawdown” and still end your day at quite different moments. Our article on balance vs equity daily drawdown goes through the wording to look for.

The start-of-day figure changes the result too. If the day had begun with a profitable open position and the rule used the higher of balance and equity at the reset, the starting point would have been higher, and the room would have run out sooner. This is how traders end up failing the daily drawdown while up on the week.

Where people slip

A simple habit: at the start of each session, write down the start-of-day figure and the equity level at which your limit would be reached. If equity is the measure, that one number tells you at a glance how close you are.

Questions

Is daily drawdown the same as a daily loss limit?

They are used almost interchangeably. Daily drawdown is the fall during the day; the daily loss limit is the most that fall is allowed to reach. Your rules define both the measure and the limit.

Do open trades count towards daily drawdown?

It depends on the rule. Equity-based rules count open losses straight away; balance-based rules count only closed trades. Read the exact wording of your own rules.

When does the daily drawdown reset?

Usually at midnight broker server time, but some rule sets use a different hour. Check your firm’s terms and compare them with the server time shown in your terminal.

Where Spectar FX Gold fits

Spectar FX Gold lets you set your own daily stop in US dollars; it does not choose the figure for you.

Spectar FX Gold is a subscription service for MetaTrader 5, for gold (XAUUSD). You set every number yourself — lot sizes, daily stop, daily target, trading hours and news window — and the rules work within those settings; we set no number for you and recommend none. When the daily stop is reached, the position is closed and nothing new is opened until the next day, which starts when the market opens in your broker’s server time.

It runs on your own MetaTrader 5 account. We never receive your broker password, never hold funds, and there are no signals. A gap in the market or slippage at your broker can carry a position past any limit; a daily stop is a setting, not a promise. The plans are MANUAL, SEMIAUTO and AUTO, monthly or yearly, with an 8-day free trial on MANUAL monthly. You can read more in the FAQ.

Keep your daily limit in one place: the free Daily Loss Limiter for MT5 locks the trading day once today's loss reaches the figure you set, and the daily loss calculator shows the balance where that happens.
